Charlie Barnett and Osman Kivrak
Monday 07 July 2008 - 23:30:59
Turkey by the Language of Music
Turkish-American Hour interviewed Charlie Barnett and Osman Kivrak, two talented musicians from Maryland.
Charlie Barnett is prolific composer who wrote over hundred film scores, mostly documentary. He describes the greater Washington area as “Docuwood”, a home to one of America’s most important centers for documentary film. The program presents a fine sample of his music from the awards winning film “Paper Clips” directed by Elliot Berlin.
Osman Kivrak who is highly acclaimed Turkish-American Violist and Composer, plays viola in Charlie’s new work “From Istanbul”. Charlie Barnett tells that he has never been to Turkey nor he knows much about the Turkish Culture, but he looked at the wonderful motifs of Usak, Kula and Kocak carpets and tried to “catch a sound unique to Turkey” as an American tourist. Barnett stresses that he prefers to keep his music organic, apart from digital sounds and use real instruments instead.
Kivrak stresses the importance of Barnett’s composing music for viola with his “From Istanbul.” Kivrak said “there is not much music composed for viola and that’s why Barnett’s work deserves extra credit for not only Turkish music but also for the world music as well.” In the program Osman Kivrak plays “Daldalan”, which is an adaptation of a Turkish Folk song, with his violinist wife Teri Lazar for the TATV viewers
