Turkish American Hour | Türk Amerikan Televizyonu
Interview with TJ Principal and Students
Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology

The first part of Episode 49 of Turkish American Hour starts with Semahat Demir’s interview with 3 students from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. TJ has been ranked the #1 high school in the nation by U.S. News and World Report for three consecutive years. Students Sara Göktürk, Arda Menzilcioglu and Suzan Ok share their experiences while studying at the magnet school. All three students speak about their continued interest in science and technology. Sara and Suzan share an interest in biological sciences, whereas Arda hopes to pursue a career in mechanical engineering. In addition, the students also talk about how they enjoy participating in social activities, including tutoring and participating in Building a Better Community.

After this inspiring interview, Semahat Demir visits the school and speaks with principal Dr. Evan Glazer. The principle explains that Thomas Jefferson is a regional governor school in Northern Virginia. He says “the TJ students are at school entire day for a comprehensive education with specialization in science and technology.” At TJ all students take calculus, computer science, and a research project in their senior year on topics such as neoroscience, oceanography, and astronomy. He empasizes the TJ’s diverse student body, their involvement in laboratory and engineering projects, clubs, and volunteering during and outside of school hours. Dr. Glazer also talks about TJ’s annual I-Night (International Night), during which students perform dances or other art forms from a variety of cultures.

In the second part of the program, Semahat Demir interviews 3 other students from Thomas Jefferson High School: Perisa Ruhi, Art Kulatti and Denise Taylor. While Perisa speaks about her interests in following the pre-med track during college, Art and Deniz show an inclination toward liberal arts and social sciences after finishing their high school studies. It is clear that while these students attend a science and technology high school, they have a variety of interests that range from acting to playing the piano, and they all enjoy being a part of Turkish culture, whether this entails visiting Turkey every summer or eating Döner at local cultural festivals.
